California Bluebell is native to the deserts of California.  Its blooms are a vibrant cobalt blue, and it works very well as a cut flower.  Darkness and shade help California Bluebell seed germination.  Hot days and cold nights, in conjunction with full sun or partial shade, provide the best growing conditions.  It should be planted in well-drained soil, although it needs little water.  The soil composition can be sandy and still support active growth.  This flower may be started indoors, but only if it is provided temperatures between 50° and 55° F.  Because of that requirement, it is usually best to start the seed outside. The broadcast rate for seeding is 6 - 7.5 pounds per acre. The seed drill rate for seeding in rows is 3 pounds per acre.
